The YWCA of the Upper Lowlands is seeking a compassionate, dedicated Children’s Counselor and Advocate to support children and youth (ages 0–17) who have witnessed domestic violence, family violence, or other trauma. This role provides crucial direct care, counseling, case management, and advocacy for both shelter residents and non-residential clients in the community.

Key Responsibilities
Direct Support & Counseling Services
Direct Care & Programming: Provide individual counseling, case management, and support groups for children and youth ages 0–17 (residential and non-residential).

Positive Development Activities: Facilitate healthy, creative, and age-appropriate play, arts & crafts, and structured activities focused on self-esteem, anti-bullying, confidence, respect, and healthy socialization.

Youth Programs: Deliver prevention education, domestic violence awareness, and social skills education at local elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as partner programs (e.g., Boys & Girls Club, Y-Teens, Girl Scouts).

Hotline & Intake: Answer hotline calls, conduct intakes/assessments according to documented policies, and maintain shelter security and client confidentiality.

Family Support: Coordinate with parenting instructors, follow up with families transitioning out of the shelter, and ensure proper parental consent and confidentiality forms are on file.

Administrative & Community Advocacy
Case Notes & Documentation: Maintain detailed, timely case notes and files for all client contacts (in-person, phone, or missed follow-ups).

Reporting: Assist the Shelter Manager with monthly statistical reporting on children served.

Resource Facilitation: Network with community agencies to make appropriate referrals for specialized services.

Curriculum & Tool Development: Devise a practical resource notebook containing support group activities and materials for children affected by violence and trauma.

Community Outreach: Deliver public presentations, distribute brochures, and host workshops to raise community awareness about the impact of domestic violence on children.

Qualifications & Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s degree in a human services field is preferred.

Experience: Prior experience working directly with children affected by trauma, or in youth counseling and child development programs, is strongly preferred.

Driver’s License & Insurance: Valid South Carolina driver’s license and personal vehicle with liability insurance (or ability to obtain insurance within three weeks of hire).

Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Strong oral/written communication, event/activity facilitation, conflict resolution, and multi-tasking abilities.

Required Training: Must complete a minimum of 15 hours of Victim Service Provider (VSP) core training during the first year of employment.
